12/24 volt trolling motor

I am currently in the the process of trading a firearm for a garden tractor the guy I am trading with wants to throw in a motor guide 12/24 volt trolling motor that is in good shape for its age.The problem is I don't even know what 12/24 volt is,how would it be different from my 12 volt? Can it run on 12 or 24 volt? what does this mean as far as batteries are are concerned. I currently use a starting battery charged by the o/b and an independent deep cycle ,charged with a charger for the 12 volt trolling motor? Would I need to add a battery and or a switch? would this be wired in series or parallel ?Are there draw backs to 12/24 volts? Is there any thing else I should know Even if I don't go with this, this is still info I would like to have for future reference Thanks in advance

You would need another battery, preferably 2 the same size and age. There are a couple of different ways to hook a 12/24 up depending on the type and model of the TM.

depending on the trolling motor the amount of voltage affects the amount of available thrust. so if you want move power then you need more voltage but if you can do everything you want in the 12v mode then theres no need for the 24v option. Notice the 12v/24v is a option you can use one or the other or both as long as you have the batteries and wiring up to the trolling motor. I would surget trying the motor on your boat using 12v first if you fell you need more power then consider upgrading to 24v.
