I've got a 12.9 chrysler model no. 124ha serial no.1500 with electric start. I think it's a '71---

Anyway it bogs down at WOT, almost runs better at 1/2 throttle, and has a problem spitting water. It also sometimes sneezes grey/white smoke from the water holes. I fish on a pretty shallow lake and sometimes I need to clear weeds--but I notice sometimes the electric start doesn't want to kick, like the battery is dead(but it's not).I am going to replace the impeller and check the plugs. What should I be on the lookout for and is there anything else I should check/look at? I had it out 3 days ago and it ran fine! Any other info regarding this motor would be great!

Kevin

Re: 12.9 problems

The basics are to clean all connections with sand paper and make sure they are all tight. The starter probably has a body ground versus a wire to ground. Verify that the starter has a good ground. For the bogging down problem replace the diaphram in the fuel pump for starters. If motor still bogs at high speeds you should rebuild the carb and clean it out real good with carb cleaner, a piece of wire and compressed air.

Sounds like crud in the idle circuits of the carb. Fuel pump rebuild is good and should improve your high end performance. The choke issue pretty much says this is a fuel related issue instead of electronic. If it were me I would take the carb completly apart. Get a new rebuild kit and remove any welsh plugs and spray with carb cleaner use a wire to clean all passages and use compressed air to blow out all passages. After you are done replace the welsh plug and install the rest of the parts for the carb. Also pull out the mixture adjustment screw and check out the tip. If it is deformed, pitted or scratched you will need to replace or repair it.

Ok guys,

the starter is working fine, but it won't stay running. It starts to run when i pull the choke out and push it back in, but then it dies. I went through initial carb settings(idle screw all the way in and then one full turn out) but that won't keep it running either. It will run if I pull choke out when it's dying and push it back in, but I know thats not right! The primer bulb stays hard, if that matters to anyone. Is it not enough gas, bad gas(gas is fresh with 50:1 mix), or am I missing something?

I put an inline fuel filter in between the hose connection and the fuel pump last year, which didn't cause any problems. The filter is clean.

Also, it seems to sneeze out of the water holes when it's dying. And yes, I'm running it with water!

It was running fine earlier this week and I've never had problems before.

I rebuilt the carb last year-will replace the daiphragm mon. or tues.

Any other tips would be great!

Kevin

P.S. Should I replace impeller or whole water pump to be on the safe side? Part No.'s?

Re: 12.9 problems

Hello Kev KC, I was just reading about your 12.9 and the problems you are or were having. The thread caught my eye because I have a 12.9 and it runs excellant but my manual recoil is broken. Antways, back to your concern, if you look at the forums, in particular the one thread that is twenty threads below your's, it is called "Overheat", that person has a similar problem and he has torn is motor down and found the problem. You should go and read it if you are still expierencing problems. Colin
