Its hard to find any info on 12' tinny restoration, does anyone have any ideas or pictures for this boat?

I would like to seal the transom / back end to stop a small leak inexpensively. Spray on Sealer perhaps??. The rest of the boat is fine for leaks. The aluminum on the top of the transom has a couple cracks as well that I would like to fix. This does not affect the stabilty.

I also have 2 new seats that I would like to mount and was wondering how to cover the existing aluminum seats with some plywood and carpet.

If you have any floor ideas please let me know as well. I just need to start somewhere!!

What kind of a leak do you have? Is it a hole, a seam or a rivet?

Your transom lumber looks too far gone to save, you should replace it along with that "scab" on the back of the transom. You can buy a quart of porch and deck paint to seal it with.

You can install carpeted plywood to your benches with blind (pop) rivets. Seal this wood before applying the carpet and apply the carpet and install the new seat bases before you install the wood on your bench. This will let you remove the carpeted wood without having to rip the carpet off to get to the rivets. Use "T" nuts on the bottom of your plywood to fasten the seat bases to for a flush mount on the bottom of your carpeted plywood.

You're pretty limited to what you can do with decks (raised and floor) because of stability and weight capacity issues.

I am assuming it is a seam? It seems to be leaking underneath the plug hole. Its not the plug though. This boat was given as payment for a job I did so what you see, is what I got!!

as far as replacing the transom and the "Scab" on the back...lol. If you can send a link with a picture or something of how it should be that would be great. Or at least what the back should look like and then i can template the transom. Also any ideas on what to do with the aluminum thats cracked on top of the transom?

Thanks for posting so quick....Im anxious to hit the water!!

So, A little Flex Seal, Sanded Down the transom and sealed it. The wood was fine!! We did a piece of 1/2 plywood, sealed and carpeted with braces for the floor. Very light and removable. We did the best we could with the scab!. Still a little ways to go but it will be water ready and a little more comfy after the carpets finished and seats are in.

I say forget the decking.......it adds weight and you really will not be walking around much.

You can paint it with rustoleum ;)

3m 5200 will seal the leak.

That transom cap can be covered/replaces with 2 pieces of angle aluminum and overlap them......even 1 piece will work

Kind of hard to see but........ this is what I used when I replaced a transom in one of my starcraft years ago

Re: 12' Tinny Restoration Ideas?

So I took the advice (Rustoleum) 019.jpg020.jpg021.jpg022.JPG023.jpgas well as my wifes. She wants the floor the original light blue color and the sides grey. We started the grey. heres where we are at. I will post finished pics hopefully soon.

Also I believe the leak is coming from the inside rivets and draining into the bottom spine of the boat. Will flex seal work on rivets??

Thank you for all of your help.

Re: 12' Tinny Restoration Ideas?

Hi floatin'. Great progress so far. Most folks use a product called Gluv-it to seal interior leaks. It's a spreadable epoxy that you paint onto the interior seams of the boat. It goes on like honey and dries flexible, but very strong. You can get it at most boat supply stores like West Maine. It does require some UV protection, but since you're installing a floor, that should cover the seams and take care of any UV issues. You could always paint over it too. I would also add some aluminum angle braces to help level out the floor and give you something to screw/rivet into. Take care to use Stainless steel screws or aluminum pop rivets. Dip both in a bit of 3M 5200 prior to installation to help seal them. Here's a pic that can give you an idea of what I mean. You can get angle aluminum and stock from Lowes/HD. Be sure you seal your decking too. Also, NEVER use pressure treated lumber. Instead use 1/2"-3/4" exterior grade plywood and seal it using epoxy (the Gluvit you use on the seams will work fine), fiberglass mat & resin, or several coats (3-4) of spar urethane. The epoxy and/or f'glass methods are nice, but a little pricey and you usually have to order supplies, whereas the Spar urethane is readily availabale at Lowes/HD and cost less.
