Since Im not an electrician I have a stupid question. I just recently bought a 12 volt receptacle and it has a grey wire and a white wire. How do I wire them up. I want to send them through my fuse panel. What fuse ect... Thanks in advance.

Re: 12 volt adapter wiring?

The wire that's connected to the center terminal of the receptacle is the "hot" wire and must be connected to the fuse panel. The wire connected to the outer shell of the receptacle is ground and connects to the ground buss which eventually works its way back to the negative terminal of the battery. Remember, whatever you plug into that receptacle must not draw more current (amps) than the wire is rated for.

OK! I found a similar thread. I have a problem trying to get lighter to work without blowing fuses. Got it wired properly ( Hot to + buss, Ground to - buss, using 16 ga wire with 10 amp fuse).
What am I doing wrong? Keeps blowing fuses. Tried 20 amp fuse...blown. 16 ga wire rated at 20 amps? Does lighter draw over 20 amps?

Head scratcher. Bad lighter socket? (Brand new)
Do I need an in-line fuse?
Greg is not trying to "steal" thread, just need help, sir.

16 Gauge and a 20 amp is plenty. Try another lighter....Does it blow immediately when the lighter is inserted?

Re: 12 volt adapter wiring?

Thanks. Thats my next try, a new lighter. In the beginning it would blow 10 amp fuse immediately when inserted. Then with additional ground wire, it worked briefly, then blew fuse.
Are you saying 16 guage wire is sufficient? And a 10 amp fuse? Or should I use a 20 amp fuse? (Tried a 20 amp and blew it also) Add an in-line fuse maybe?
I think I have a bad lighter although it's new.
Or, check for dirty battery terminal. But all other electrical working fine. Hmmmmmmmm

Re: 12 volt adapter wiring?

If you bought an accessory outlet you bought the wrong thing. These are not intended to run a cigarette lighter since they do not release the lighter and are not designed for the heat created by the lighter. They only intended to operate lower current devices light spot lights, cell phone chargers, iPods, etc. Get a bucket full of lighter sockets from your local salvage yard.
