Check the compression on all 4 cylinders, looking for 120-150psi, and all 4 should be within 13 psi of each other.<br />Check for spark on all 4 plugs.<br />Inspect the spark plugs, all should look the same, kindof dirty.<br />None should look clean and new.<br />Test run.<br />Make sure the telltale (water stream) is pumping out water.<br />If its on a boat, take it for a test drive.<br />Inspect the paint around the head of the engine, looking for bubbled, peeling, dull, or burnt paint, sure sign it was overheated.<br /><br />Plan on doing approx $150-200 of preventive maintenance on it after purchase.
