I did quite a bit of reading but couldn't find an answer.

I have a problem on a 1993 evinrude 120hp. I looked on the engine and the steering unit under the dash and can't find any adjustment. The steering cable is new. I just recently got this boat, but I didn't think this would be hard to fix.
I can't let go of the wheel at any speed or it will veer to either side. The faster I'm going the faster it spins. When out of the water, engine moves very easy. Any tilt up in trim and it will flop right down, left or right.

Thanks for looking and any help.

Veer to which side? There's a torque tab below the cavitation plate which is adjusted in the direction the boats tends to go. Adjust in small increments until the steering is neutral at high power 4000 RPM and >. There may also be a steering friction adjustment ... consult your engine owners manual.

is there play in the steering or is it just easy to turn the wheel. sound like you have regular teleflex helm, which direction does the boat want to go?

No play. just very easy to turn. Teleflex safe-t steering. It wiil go either direction. It just depends on which way it first starts.

if the trim tab on the lower wont make it better,I suggest you buy a newer help with no feedback steering, there arent many boats with the older style cable steering that wont be affected by the engine torque,if you get a new helm it will make a huge differance, they added another gear that prevents the torque from turning the wheel, you can probably use the new cable ,too bad you didnt know before buying the cable, often the whole kit is not much more than the cable, you might look to buy second hand helm, but be sure its no feedback, the v-4 does have alot of torque compared to the smaller engines,in fact on larger engines its suggested to use a push pull system utilizing 2 cables, but for money savings, hardly done, hydraulic steering was the answer
