120 HP power pack

I just bought a 1992 Cresliner with a 120 HP Johnson same year I believe. While running on a local lake it died which was later determined to be a bad power pack by the local marina, who I have a great amount of confidence in.Anyhow they replaced the power pack and it now runs perfect. I have heard on the older models this was fairly common. I searched all of the archives here with no mention of power pack failures. I need advise from some of you "old time Johnson" guys on whether I should carry a spare power pack or not? They are rather pricey so if this is not that common on the newer ones I'd rather not spend the money. Thanks for the help!

Re: 120 HP power pack

I know guys who carry spare everything. I carry spare tires for the trailor. Nothing else.

A spare is always good but I would check if something caused it to go bad before buying a spare.
Power packs do fail on their own from time to time but they can also be caused to fail by things like bad coils or voltage being applied to the kill circuit wire via a short in the harness or a faulty ignition switch.

Do a search and read up on how to test for some of the causes of power pack failures.

Re: 120 HP power pack

It's kinda rare for an OMC /BRP pack to give up on all cylinders at once although it can happen. The whole ignition on your V4 is sort of like 4 independent systems. In respect to some components it's like 2 but you get the idea. For all 4 sides to go out at once isn't very likely. So to carry a spare is probably an expense you don't need in my opinion.

Thanks so much for your fast answers on this. I feel better about it not being a real common problem and I think I'll save the $$$ I would have spent on a spare for fuel!

I hear that! I too am spending money on fuel rather than things for the boat.
