Do you think a '96 Evinrude 25hp long shaft of 120 lbs is too heavy to use as a kicker on a 20' fiberglass boat of 2500 lbs?

I would not say too heavy.some 9.9hp are 90-100lbs.Another 20 lbs is not much.It will depend if you are going to permantly mount it or take it on and off.The boat may be off balance a bit.Charlie

It would be borderline if you plan on mounting it to a standard motor bracket. Make sure you have a heavy-duty bracket that's rated for the motor's weight. Otherwise, I would think that if your boat is well built, that it's own transom would handle the kicker...if there's room.

You may want to look into a smaller, high thrust kicker. Advantage being lighter, with the thrust of a bigger HP outboard.

any suggestions for a lightweight high thrust kicker that'll push a 20' 2500 lb boat?

I'm not sure I understand how high thrust works.. and I am curious myself cos I'm in the market for a new kicker..

if you have a 25HP motor, and its propped to allow it to reach its optimium power band,, how can a high thrust setup be any better??

For that matter, what exactly is a high thrust motor? is it a motor with higher torque then normal?

rgds

Franki

CBP, I use 9.9 HP HT's on my boats up to 24'. Mostly for trolling, but they also work well as auxiliary or emergency power.

Mercury makes the Big Foot series. Honda makes a BF8 and BF9.9 with what they call "Power Thrust". And Yamaha makes their High Thrust in a T8 and T9.9 (and on up). Most of these kickers will be around 100 lbs or so, and all available in 25" shafts.

Honda uses their standard gear case, and higher gearing than both Mercury and Yamaha. They basically just convert to a 4-blade thrust prop.

Mercury's Big Foot is also geared higher than Yamaha's.

Yamaha uses the lowest gearing available in their T9.9 (at 2.92). The engine is tuned different than their standard F9.9 for thrust, has the different gear case, and will have a high thrust prop. IMO, only Yamaha makes a true "High Thrust" model, and the T9.9 is the one I would recommend. They run forever like a swiss watch. ;)

Re: 120 lb 25hp kicker too heavy?

Guys,

I am in the market for a kicker as well. I have a 24' proline w/a and there is a 15hp yamaha model available here which is used by the commercial fishermen. There is an 8 hp and a 25 but one might be too light and the other too heavy. Think it might be a 20" shaft but the bracket is adjustable.I read Forktails comments on the Yamaha T9.9 . My fear here is this might not be altogether adequate .I have one of those eez-in brackets with a limitation of 20 hp max.

Your opinions welcomed

Thanks
