Hello all, new to the board as of today. Loads of great info here. Hope to learn lots.
My question to the group is in regard to my 120HP force outboard. It is a mid to late 90's model (can't remember offhand)that is running great and always has. However, some of the comments regarding Force motors on this board have me a little spooked. I have owned this boat for about 6 years (bought it nearly new)and use it probably 100 hrs / season. We have fairly short open water seasons up here (May-Oct). It is on a 17' Campion Allante boat.
My question is: what maintenance items should be looked at on this motor and at what intervals. I am ashamed to say that I have never even changed the plugs. In fact, last fall a bushing went in the starter and that was the first time I had ever had the cover off.
Also, what is the max WOT RPM for this engine. When I got it there was no manuals. Right now it runs at 5500-5600rpm for a indicated speedo speed of about 45mph. I don't have a gps to check if it is accurate.
Thanks in advance
Slapshot

Howdy, Slapshot.

Welcome to iboats. :)

You need a Service Manual. It will answer most of your questions and a whole lot more.

It is time to change the water pump impeller; you are cooling on borrowed time.

Inspect your plugs. Note which cylinder each comes from and "read" the engine and mixture condition from them. You can change them if needed, but I prefer to merely clean and regap them unless there is significant erosion.

Your performance. . .5600rpm at around 45mph sounds like a well set up engine with the right prop and running well.

Good luck. :)

Re: 120HP Force Maintenance

Clymer service manual says the following.
90 and 120Hp 1990A 4500-5500rpm W.O.T
90 and 120HP 1990B-1994 5000-5500
90 and 120Hp 1995-1999 4750-5250

I also got somewhat spooked by the negative press about Force.I am convinced The problem is cured by regular maintainance. I have found My 1991 70Hp Force not to difficult to repair the problems so far. Need that service manual though.

Hi Slapshot!

Check that your overheat buzzer works. Mine did not work, I was lucky not to break anything.

Good boatings,

-Jaba-

Re: 120HP Force Maintenance

I have an 85 bayliner and my buzzer is located under the control panel to the right of the steering wheel assembly. Im not sure if your motor is the same but on my 85 force 125 theres a sending unit on the head between plugs 1 and 2 if your counting top to bottom. Take a screw driver or metel rod, anything that will conduct electricity and ground the top of that sending unit out to one of the plugs (cause the head is usually painted) and that should trigger the buzzer. This is how its explained in my mannual and i cant see yours being all that much different. Good luck and change that water pump along with the thermostat. And when you drop the lower unit to change the water pump dont turn the shift shaft, i had to learn this that hard way.......Goodluck
