my neighbors kid just came home with an older mako with a 1971 evinrude 125 on it. it starts and runs for about 3 minutes then quits like you turned the key off which is why the previous owner got rid of it. it has a new aftermarket power pack ,coil, ignition wires, and distributer cap under the stator on it. I printed out the wiring diagram here on iboats. when it quits it still has power at the terminal strips where it should have with the key on. however at this point it has no spark . if we try the next day it will start and do the same thing. it does need a pump impeller I can tell it is a little weak but the motor never got above 130 degrees. would appreciate any help, thanks....p.s. what does the thermal switch in the top of the block do?

Re: 125 cutting out

When my 72 100 hp engine did that, I replaced the sensor under the flywheel. Some of these early units had two-stage choke solenoids. They would retain some choke until the engine warmed up to a set temp. Can't fully explain it's function, as I never thought it was useful the years I had the engine. That switch is not the same as the overheat switch in the starboard head.

Go to cdielectronics.com and you may find some trouble shooting procedures for your ignition.

Re: 125 cutting out

thanks, I will check out cdi for trouble shooting and pull the flywheel to see what may be going on under there. I may be able to find a used sensor at a salvage yard and give it a try. thanks again.......
