i have a 125hp 1971 evinrude with hydro electric shift. I finally have the engine trying to turn over but that is as far as i have gotten. I took apart the carbs and cleaned them as much as possible.I tried to get rebuild kits but the evinrude guy said they didnt have them for my boat motor. I have no gas hooked up but am seeing if the motor will even turn over. I got it to backfire one time. Please any insight?

Have your model number of the engine handy and check with NAPA for those carburetor kits.

Re: 125 evinrude starting problems

Take the plugs out and turn the engine by hand. If should turn relatively easy. If it doesn't. either the lower unit has a problem or the power head has an internal problem. If the engine spins freely by hand, you either have a bad battery or a weak starter. Using jumper cables, jump the starter directly. If it now spins freely, you need to look at battery cables (both ends) and the starter solenoid. If jumping the starter directly still does not spin the engine freely, you need a starter rebuild. Any respectable automotive starter/alternator rebuilder in your area should be able to do the job.

If the engine cranks, that is the flywheel rotates.... it is turning over.

Do you mean that it is turning over and won't atart?

you will have to excuse me and my friends ,we are a bunch of idiots. the starter engages the flywheel and spins everything. the motor sounds like its trying to turn over, we checked the spark plugs, everything is ok there. is it supposed to turn over without gas? real sorry guys, we just dont know that much but thank for everything
