I'm having problems with my Merc 125 hp 2002. A few weeks back I had a magnet come loose from underside of flywheel, and fragments of the magnet wedged between flywheel and stator. I did not realize what happened right away after boat died out at idol, so tried to restart motor only to strip all the teeth off my starter since flywheel wouldnt spin. I ordered a new flywheel and starter and replaced them both. I didn't order a new stator since it did not look damaged but I did not check it. I fired it up in my driveway with muffs on and she ran beautiful. I took the boat out today and it started right up ran great.Turned off and started up 3 or 4 times during the day. Then when I came off plane at a no wake zone she died out and would not turn over again. I tried everything but she wouldn't fire. Seemed to be getting fuel since I could smell gas, but no spark. Got her home tried to fire her up after sitting a while but only got a loud backfire. Could the timing be off? or a stator problem? The flywheel had a keyway in it so how could timing be off? any help would be appreciated.

The 64 dollar question to answer is this:

What caused the initial flywheel failure?

Stator is probably toast by now. I suspect there's contact between the flywheel and the stator, and there should be none at all. It causes a distortion of the magnetic flux and gross overheating.

Stator mounting?
Top crankshaft main bearing?

hope it helps

The stator wasn't touched by flywheel, but a magnet came loose under flywheel and broke and fragments from magnet wedged between stator and flywheel. If stator is bad why did it start up and run great for a while before crapping out on me again after replacing with new flywheel? I spoke with a few different marine mechanics and they said magnets come loose from flywheel quite often. They said eppoxy fails and magnet falls off from vibration.

You're right. I don't know anything.

Good luck

The first thing to check is if the kill switch has been shut off, next for spark and if it has spark, ck fuel and compression. It proably has no spark, if so unplug the black/yellow wire, there will be a plug in be for the wire reachs the CDM units. If unplugging don't help we can give a test for the system.

Sorry for not bringing this up to start with, but wheh you reinstalled the flywheel was it seated properly and did you torque it the manufactures specs. As the key maybe sheared.

Laddie,
You were right key was sheered off. That will answer alot of questions. I was told the torque was 65 foot lbs, I guess I was mis informed. Thanks alot for your help. Keats
