Hi, I have a 12/24v trolling motor that is rated at 42 lbs. I have it set up as a 12v only, but I am curious to know if while running at 12 volts does it still have 42 lbs of thrust? If not is there a way to determine how any lbs it would be at 12 volts? If it is 42 lbs at 12 volts what would be the advantage of running it at 24 volts?

Thank you!

Re: 12v / 24v trolling motor question

Ever look at an electric motor and see the rating that says 110V - xxA and if the motor is also capable of running at 220V it will say 220V - xxA. The amp rating on 220V will be 1/2 that of the 115V rating. Therefore, yes, the motor will still be 42# on 12V but it will be drawing twice the current than it would if running on 24V. Conversely, on 24 volts it would use 1/2 the current so it will run much longer -- but you do need two batteries to take advantage of the feature.
