I am looking at installing a 12V transformer to run off of my 110VAC system so that I can use all of my onboard systems in the slip. Does anyone have a diagram of what I need to to do and how large of a transformer I would need? Lighting is not an issue, but water pump, and other 12V systems (Radio AM/FM/CD, VHF, etc. I estimate a max of 6-8 amps at 12V.

Thanks

Re: 12V Transformer

It might be more cost effective to purchase a group 27 deep cycle marine battery and top it up once a week or so with a charger. If you are only drawing 8 to 10 amps the battery will give you lots of running time. To purchase a good, well filtered step down, rectified transformer(120 V.A.C. to 12 V.DC.), I'm guessing at least $200.00:)
P.S. if you use the battery/charger set-up you should disconnect the battery from your appliances while charging due to the poor filtering in most batt. chargers.
Here is a link to one site..this will give you an idea of what to look for. The example I have posted is a bit light in current rating..I would suggest in going with a unit that will deliver at least 15 amps @ 12 V.D/C..good luck, cheers , Doug:)
