Hi All,

Im currently looking at purchasing my next boat and it is fitted with a Yamaha 130 2-stroke. Coming from a Mercruiser stern drive I'm not sure exactly what I should be checking prior to sale. Current owner tells me is has under 200 hours but no hour meter is fitted so I dont believe it 100%. The engine HASNT been serviced in over 12months as the boat hasnt been used :-(

What shall I be looking at/for when going over this engine? I was going to compression test it, what is good compression on one of these motors? Is there any special procedure for testing this motor?

I was also going to remove the lower gearbox drain bolt and see if the oil is milky or not.

Apart from those two and making sure it starts and selects gears Im not to sure what else I would be doing.

What will I need to replace when servicing it if it hasnt been touched in over a year?

I've found the owners manual online at the yamaha site but is there a Service/workshop manual too?

Thanks in advance,

Okay this is an almost bulletproof Yamaha carbed model.

Check the compression. Warm. Look for even numbers.

Do a spark check. All should jump a gap, with a hot blue spark.

If it has sat for 12 months, count on doing a carb rebuild. With good compression and good spark and an engine that does not run well that is usually the case. Although you could pull a drain plug on the carb and check for any gum or crap.

Shift the engine with someone turning the prop. Shift well. Okay.

Pull the lower drain screw on the propshaft and look at the oil. Clean? Milky? Water? If clean with no water and no excessive metal filings or any fragments, it is most likely alright.

You are buying the boat, so check the steering. Is it easy to steer from stop to stop? If hydraulic run your hand along the bottom of the steering cylinder. Any oil? Check the transom well, any signs of oil? This will determine if you will need to have the cylinder resealed.

If it has guages and the engine will run. Check your battery voltage while the engine is running. Does it show 13V or better?

These engines are great overall, as long as everything is taken care of. Count on a new fuel water seperating filter. You will need to drain the fuel in the boat and put in fresh. As I said the carbs are suspect and will probably need to be rebuilt and synchronized.

Check the oil. Any water or other contaminates? Push the button on the side of the oil tank on the engine. Does it raise the level in the tank? This will check the lift pump in the boat oil tank. It is best to remove oil from the engine tank and turn on the key. It should give you a low oil warning signal and then begin to fill the engine tank automatically.

Start engine and ground out the temp sensors on the heads. Alarm? It should set off an alarm and indicate on the guages.

Other than these issues. It looks like a good buy.

Oh yeah. Count on putting in a new water pump and thermostats. That will put this in service nicely.

Re: 130 2-Stroke pre purchase inspection / service advice

All outboards ran good for the owner the last time he used it. It is used, you can expect some small problem to arise. Two things I can recommend is this. Have the owner open up the manual by pass screw to manually raise and lower the leg. I am not saying have him point it out or tell you he does not have suitable big straight slot screw driver. Have him do it. Dont be surprised if he ends up with an impact driver. Have him start out with light impact settings.
Second suggestion is this, drop the lower unit. Make sure it will disconnect from the power head. Let this be the last thing you do so leave the lower unit in you car, you are going to replace the water pump anyway. Might sound far fetched but if the shaft is seized to the power head, the motor is useless. It does happen , trust me. FRED

Hi Multimech,

Thanks for such an in-depth response thats exactly what I was after.

Could you please give me a brief run down on how to carry out a spark test?

What do the drain plugs on these carbies look like and the carbs easily accessible?

When you suggests that I spin the prob and get someone to shift it into gear what am I looking for?

Is the oil pump button pretty easy to spot?

Ive know convinced the seller into letting me water test so this will help my decision dramatically.

Thanks again,

Chris
