My 130 HP Ocean Runner 2000 is unhappy. I have the manual and have dome some basic trouble shooting, but I am not very experienced with these engines yet.

Symptoms:
1. Cold starts well, idles till warm then stalls
2. Warm starts well, stalls quickly
3. Slowly running up RPMs, typically no stall runs well
4. Quickly advancing throttle, stalls almost always
5. *might* be backfiring out the exhaust
6. Runs well above 2000 RPMs up to WOT

Troubleshooting I have done:
1. Checked gas, gas lines and fuel delivery upto Carbs
2. Removed and inspected carb bowls, floats, needles, throttle body and idle jets. All were clean and clear of any varnish
3. Replaced plugs
4. Visually inspected Reed Valve Boxes... the looked good and all were closed, but I was not 100% sure what to look for.

When I took off the throttle body I found a small tear in one of the seals. I have replaved the seal, but the tear was small so I have trouble thinking this is the root cause (perhaps I am wrong?).

I am going to check the choke selinoid and feul pump tonight, but I have not noticed any fuel (nevermind too much) coming from the choke.

Thanks in advance, Any help is greatly apprechiated.

I am no expert but my 200 hp ocean runner acts the same way. I just found the stator resistace all out of wack & have one coming the end of the week. You might want to check yours.

I'd be inclined to check your link and sync settings, i.e. how the ignition timing advance and throttle opening work together. Your manual will tell you how to do this. Make sure your timer base is rotating correctly and is not sticking.

Seaport, that is on my list of possible causes. I could nt tell from the manual though if this is a seperate issue from timing? They seem to be related, but I notice the you can sync the throttle value with a home made tool, where as to time it I need to pick up a $300 tools. So if I need to do both at the same time, I'd rather pay a mechanic $300 to do the job right.

Thanks.

Re: 130 HP Ocean Runner 2000 - stall issues

I looked at the trottle linkage today, all screws still have the factory orange markings stuff they put on (it's like like lock-tight) and it looks like nothing has shifted at all, is it possible that the throttle linkage still needs to be adjusted given the above?

Also, if I manually advance the cam follower all 4 butterflies open at exactly the same time and the engine still has the problems above. Any thoughts?

I am going to check the stator as soon as the rain lets up, but I am curious how that could impact the engine in this way. I have not checked Omhs it with a multi-meter yet, but the when running my on-board meter reads a steady 18 volts.

The link and sync settings are all about how the ignition timing is advanced (by rotating the timer base) in synchronism with the carb butterflies opening as the throttle is opened. If this is not set up correctly the motor will exhibit symptoms as you indicate.

Another reason for the motor stalling as you open the throttle is that the carb low speed jets are set too lean. The service manual will detail how to set these. Basically you run the boat in the water at idle speed for a few minutes and adjust each jet in turn until the motor doesn't stall.

Checking the timing is no big deal but you need a timing light. These are not that expensive. Ideally WOT timing should be set with the boat in the water at full throttle but Joe Reeves has published a method for setting the WOT timing without having to do this. I think this method is in the Engine FAQ's but I can't access this part of the forum for some reason. Can other people??? Also search doesn't seem to work well for me.

WOT timing affects the power developed at full throttle whereas the idle timing will affect the idle rpms. The motor has a quickstart feature which advances the timing by 10 degrees when the motor is cold. This may explain why it idles OK when it is cold.

I don't think the stator is relevant here. I'd check out the low speed idle jet settings, linc & sync & timing first.

Thanks Stat. I made sure the jets were clean but did not even think to adjust them. That sounds very plausible, since I would think that would explain why once I am past the idle jets and over 1500-2K rpms she runs like a champ.
