hi, i posted this at screamandfly.com also..... thought id ask the gurus here too....

i have a 1988 merc 2.0L 135hp v6 complete motor and a 1987 merc 200 2.5L bad motor with a good powerhead...

can i put the 2.5L on a 2.0L midsection?

the 200 is a complete motor, but the lower unit is cracked bad and the midsection is toasted. the 135 is pristine, in fact, i have 2 of the 135's

its not that the 135's are bad, they work perfectly, but i have a 20' sportcraft center console and its a heavy boat. i had a 225 jomson sea drive on it, but thats gone now. it made the boat go 52.6mph via gps. now i have a stainless marine single engine bracket w/full swim platform and 30" setback. i was gonna put the 135 on the boat, and keep the other as a spare, but now i have this other 200hp 1987 motor too. the 200 merc would make the boat go much better rthan the 135 would, im thinking.

any ideas, please email me phatmanmike@yahoo.com or call me 727-643-1661 my cell in largo florida.....

my wife and i are going to the keys , camping at biscayne natl park the second week in march, and need the boat ready by then. it now has no motor or steering.

live near by? wanna help? wanna trade the 2 135's for a single 225?

phatmanmike@yahoo.com

Re: 135 and 200 powerhead swap?

The only problem, I think and I am not expert nor have I done this, is the different gear ratio between the 135 & 200 hp models. I imagine both engines have the same shaft length, right?

I bet some senior iboat members will know for sure.

Your boat will sit alot better with weight loss going from the 135's to a single 200. The 200hp will also put alot less stress on your transom.

Good Luck

They will bolt together no problem. 135 has a 2:1 gear ratio and the 200 usually has 1.87:1 . . . so you will need a different pitch prop. Make sure to swap the exhaust tuners from the mid section too.
