1976 135 evin cuts off above 4000 rpm after about 5 minutes, if i try to start it right after it shuts off it sounds like its trying to lock up! after about 30 second wait it will crank up and run, pumping plenty of water, compression between 125-130 on all cylinders, just ran it on the hose for 30 minutes in gear & it ran fine the heads were warm to the touch, could i be losing a cylinder even with the good compression ? Thanks for any help

Re: 135 evinrude shuts down

i'm not an expert but are you shure you have enough water presure?
a little above 4000 rpms your engine is working hardest end need most cooling so if you say it sounds like locking up may be your waterpump doesnt have enough pressure or may be the waterdeflectors are blocking propper waterflow direction. so you almost have a seizure
if it happens again feel around the cylinders all 4 may be you can feel anny difference in temperature.
somethimes the pp will fail when warming up.
check for spark after it fails see if you have a weak spark or no spark at some cylinder

thats my two cents worth

reeldutch

with the engine off and the the muffs hooked up and the water on its got some water flowing from the 3/4 ports at the bottom of the heads when i start the engine its got full flow and seems to be plenty of pressure, mech says by phone its losing a cylinder or maybe bearings ? but the compression is good and the old engine is pretty quiet no mettalic sounds, I don't know

If i try and start it right after it cuts off it it seems like a almost dead battery won't turn over or barely but if i wait 30 seconds to a minute it spins over and cranks up, this happend 3 times back to back on the way in to the ramp, no discoloration of paint on block or heads from being hot.

You have a bad water pump. No water should get past the pump up into the engine unless the engine is turning over

Re: 135 evinrude shuts down

Sorry, my mistake, I was turning over the engine at the time the water was slightly coming out of the 3/4 ports.
After I read your post I wasn't sure, I went back out, removed the 3/4 hose, hooked up the muffs and no water was getting past the water pump. Could I still have a bad water pump?
Thanks I really appreciate the help.
Billy
