Hi everyone I am finally getting around to fixing my Johnson 135 its a 1973. I have a scored one piston and rings. I am also going to overhaul the carbs and put new coils on it(The coils had bad rust).

My question is this what else should I be thinking about completing with this motor during the process? I had just rebuilt my Merc 1350 and it runs great now but I really don't know much about the electrical on this one so is there something more I should replace during the overhaul? Any advice is welcome and thanks as usual.

Things I know Im already going to replace:
gaskets
coils
piston/rings
carb kits

Also Im only having one cylindar bored and the rest will just be honed.

Some pics of my progress and new motor stand:
http://opk.gotdns.org/thegirlsandjohnson135hp/photos/photo6.jpg

http://opk.gotdns.org/thegirlsandjohnson135hp/photos/photo9.jpg

http://opk.gotdns.org/thegirlsandjohnson135hp/photos/photo16.jpg

Re: 135hp Johnson 73

Suggest you obtain a set of 4 intake filler blocks, p/n 322684. Standard in the later 140's. They are NLA, but are around. These nest in the intake, by the reed boxes. Be sure to get the v-4 ones, as the v6 ones are slightly larger. Also, add a set of composite reeds. When you have the thermostat housing plate off, be sure that both of the pinholes in the plate are open. rickdb1's suggestion is right on.

You can get rid of that temp sender that was hooked to the choke. There was a bulletin years ago about that.

Keep in mind the 73 V4's were a year all by themselves. Make sure you get pistons for a 73 135. No other year will work unless someone has changed the block, crank & rods.
