Hi Folks,
So I bought a boat. Last May I bought a 14' Flat Bottom Alumacraft Jon Boat, almost exclusively for fishing and floating (not much of a duck hunter). I have had it for a little over a year now, and it was a wonderful functional little boat when I bought it, but not too pretty. I have wanted to paint it, and now I am finally getting around to it. I will post photographs one I have a few posts under my belt (I think I read that you need three to post pictures). So far, I welded up a few cracks (around the gunnel mostly) with the classic SpoolGun-Grinder combination, I beefed up the front end - the original owner has used the front single handle for a winch pull, and the two rivets holding it on had blown through 1 out of the 2 sheets of aluminum it was through. So me and my dad driled those rivets, put a backer piece of aluminum, then put a new eye in the middle and two handles on the sides - very skookum (will show in photographs). Now that its stripped, time to paint. It had the original paint job, but was very scarred, lots of bare aluminum. So we have washed it thoroughly, scuffed it, and are going to do a paint process as follows: 1) Rustoleum SE primer (with mineral spirits prep, as can states) on bare aluminum, then a Rustoleum Oil Based enamel paint - two tone - blue on bottom the upper half of the hull. This will not be the best paintjob, but it will be a lot prettier than it is now, and suits the monetary class of both me and my boat
Some of the last few things before I get it in the water will be a couple cleats by each of the two seats for anchoring while fishing (annoying to walk to the front), a couple drink holders, and away we go!
PS. I made a floor in it last year of 1.5" blue foam with 3/8" plywood on top.
I started looking at this forum for info on how to paint, but got caught up spending hours looking at everyones resto's and builds. looks like a sweet community of people who also love boats!!
