Hi Folks,

So I bought a boat. Last May I bought a 14' Flat Bottom Alumacraft Jon Boat, almost exclusively for fishing and floating (not much of a duck hunter). I have had it for a little over a year now, and it was a wonderful functional little boat when I bought it, but not too pretty. I have wanted to paint it, and now I am finally getting around to it. I will post photographs one I have a few posts under my belt (I think I read that you need three to post pictures). So far, I welded up a few cracks (around the gunnel mostly) with the classic SpoolGun-Grinder combination, I beefed up the front end - the original owner has used the front single handle for a winch pull, and the two rivets holding it on had blown through 1 out of the 2 sheets of aluminum it was through. So me and my dad driled those rivets, put a backer piece of aluminum, then put a new eye in the middle and two handles on the sides - very skookum (will show in photographs). Now that its stripped, time to paint. It had the original paint job, but was very scarred, lots of bare aluminum. So we have washed it thoroughly, scuffed it, and are going to do a paint process as follows: 1) Rustoleum SE primer (with mineral spirits prep, as can states) on bare aluminum, then a Rustoleum Oil Based enamel paint - two tone - blue on bottom the upper half of the hull. This will not be the best paintjob, but it will be a lot prettier than it is now, and suits the monetary class of both me and my boat :) Some of the last few things before I get it in the water will be a couple cleats by each of the two seats for anchoring while fishing (annoying to walk to the front), a couple drink holders, and away we go!

PS. I made a floor in it last year of 1.5" blue foam with 3/8" plywood on top.

I started looking at this forum for info on how to paint, but got caught up spending hours looking at everyones resto's and builds. looks like a sweet community of people who also love boats!!

Thanks! Yeah it seems like a definite wealth of knowledge. Some day I want to learn TIG and weld my own flat bottom riverboat together. Something that has a jet instead of a prop, much more suitable for the waters I intend to fish!

Sounds like a goal and for sure, it is a possibility. Being from alaska, what type of fishing do you normally aim for? My goal for my resto is for fishing as well, just curious.

Northern Pike.

That is my favorite, actually the inspiration for the soon-to-be name for the boat, The Waterwolf. But I love to flyfish for grayling as well, and Salmon when they run (but theyre not good eating when they get to town). Pike however are delicious :)

A man after my own heart. I have the nickname of "The Pike Slayer" in my part of the world. 99% of my time is in pursuit of the "WaterWolf". Though I tend to fish, i like to refer to it as hunting. I bet there is good scrappers up there.

Northerns are the most fun, especially when it turns in to a spot and stalk when you see them.

Here are some pictures of the Waterwolf and what I did to it

Theres the boat sitting on the bank at my work.

It used to have just one handle in the middle on the front of the bow for both winching onto a trailer and lifting/moving around, and both of its rivets had blown through 1 out of the two pieces of aluminum they were holding by, so that had to change.

Theres the inside of the bow where I reinforced with 1/8" backer aluminum plate

Theres the outside of the bow with the hardwear I mounted

More pictures to come tonight before / after I start painting

Got the SE priming done tonight and then the first coat of the hull paint - Rustoleum Royal Blue with a couple splashes of black in it! super happy with my little custom color job, the royal blue was just to "neon" for my tastes

Update: I got the second coat of paint on the top half, went with a gloss white. I also painted the interior with just Rustoleum SE primer and then standard rustoleum grey primer, and then a dark grey latex enamel my dad had laying around for the floorboard (3/8" ply on 1.5" Bluefoam). I think Im going to do another coat of white on the gunnels, It just is a high wear area and doesn't quite have perfect coverage. Not necessary, but I think I'm going to do it.

Question: I've been spending a few days parusing through the threads here, and it seems like it's almost strictly trihulls. Don't get me wrong, My dad has a tihull jetcraft, and I grew up on that thing and we've even taken it to the Puget Sound. But I am at the core a river rat. Are there some flat bottom boys, extreme shallows out there? Where are the Jet lower units? I'm just interested. So many sick boats on here, they have to be out there..

Update:

Paint is done! I finished the last coat last night and just had to take off the tape before work this morning. Shes a beaut!!

Thee title decals are printing today, I'll pick them up tonight. I might wait another day to put them on? I don't know, does anyone think the enamel might have a tough time drying through a vinyl decal? Might just give it time just in case.

Looks like you are doing a great job, There some T-hullers here, but there a quite a few flat bottoms as well v-hull guys!

Say high to the bears for me, I spent a few years in Alaska, on deployment when I was still young enough to serve!

Thanks! I'll pass your word on to the bears, although I think they are lying low with all these fires we have going on - pretty smoky in town right now. In fact every one and every thing is lying low! Nice that I have a shop to play in, not a bad time to have the boat in 'dry dock' as my buddy likes to call it.

So for the inside, I used just Rustoleum's Fast drying Grey primer. It looked almost white when I put it on! Wish it was a little darker, it might get dirty with all the fishin I do, but it's not worth keeping it out of the water any longer!!

Ill pick up the decals on my way home from work today - Hope they turned out well, had Arctic Sign & Graphics print them out, 5.5" tall, Blue Vinyl that I got a color pallete from them to take home and match CMYK colors for the bottom blue color, then picked out a font from dafont.com. also ordered them with a laminate coating to help with durability. Wish me luck!!

The mods begin!! Previously, this was just a boat that I fished in. Now, it is becoming a fishing boat!!

Custom rod holders I built with my dad, just 6" of 1 1/4" PVC with and pipe strapping, thru bolted to the gunnels with stainless bolts and nylon lock nuts (everythiing is mounted that way) and my dad didn't think they needed it, but i gouged a groove in the PVC under the strapping, and then put a layer of epoxy between the two for better grip

Some good ol' scotty Rod holders, speak for themselves

A little shot of the boat with the hardware. Unfortunately, the decal was not printed :( so tonight is decal, oar locks, and cleats.

Going trolling for trout with my dad this weekend (my father's day gift the past few years has been fishing trips) at Paxson Lake, AK. Should be an awesome time to test out the new equipment!

Got the cleats and oarlocks mounted tonight, I'm bummed I didn't get off in time to go grab my decal from the print shop, so that will have to be a tomorrow thing.

Picture of the cleats and oarlocks. Hope my dad doesn't get upset his picture is on the internet! you know what they say, better to ask forgiveness than permission..

Just another shot of it on the trailer ;)
