Hi ,<br />i am in the market for a new 4 stroke and wanted to talk to people that own the suzuki or the yamaha f150.....mostly regaurding price, reliabuility and over all preformance....i know the suzuki is less $ but is the power good...i am replaceing a 2000 135hp mercury 2 stroke.....great motor but tooooooo much gas...it will be going on a 2300 seaox w/ a home made cudy in the bow....i do 23 kts.....wonder if ill get more speed from the 140/ or the 150<br />thanks <br />-f/v Osprey

I've got the F150 on a 2004 Polar 2010 Center Console and have been happy with its performance during the first season I have owned and used it. Boat weighs around 3000 lbs rigged and full of gas. I would consider the motor more than adequate for my purposes. I love the fact that it sips gas and if I may add gas that I don't have to mix oil with. Not really sure what expectations you have of the speed department. I've done around 43mph per GPS when all trimmed out, half a tank of fuel, and riding solo. With your boat being a little bigger, I wouldn't expect to realistically see anything over the 40mph. range with the 150 and probably around 4-5 mph less with the 140.<br /><br />I also considered the same motors but wanted to get as close to the 150 max HP rating as possible and therefore opted for the F150.<br /><br />Kevin

Hi,<br />The Yamaha F150 has shown in tests to outperform most of other standard 150 hp outboards on the market today. It has top score on almost all important factors like force, speed, fuel efficency, low noice level for example. But test is one thing, real life use over longer period another thing usually that is the real test to judge from in my opinion. It is new for 2004 and can not be said to be an outboard that has been in use any longer time yet to make any well founded conclusion of reliability. Yamaha marine mechanics on this forum may tell if it has shown any weak spot(s) yet.<br />It is expensive but so are other 150 hp outboards also.<br />Personally I would place the Yamaha F150 high on the list of 150 hp to consider. The Honda BF150 seems nice also but is not quite up to Yamaha F150 force if judged by the tests I have read.<br />Suzuki DF140/Johnson 140 4-stroke is fine also but has not the force of the Yamaha F150. The 140 hp 4-stroke from Suzuki (Johnson) is more like upsized 115 hp outboard that has 140 hp squeezed out of it.

At the fish camp I visit on LOTW every summer, two of the guides have identical boats. Identical except that Scott has a F150 on his and Alan runs a DF140.<br /><br />Both are wonderfully smooth and quiet. Both are as fast as we want to go.<br /><br />The DF140 with 2 aboard kept up with the F150 with 3 aboard, whatever that might mean. The F150 has a bit better hole shot.

twofing,<br />I doubt seriously if the 140 4-stroke would out perform your 135 in the power/speed department. I replaced a Merc 115 2-stroke on my Tracker Avalanche (1500 # hull) with the Johnson/Suzuki 4-stroke. The 115 would push the boat around 46 mph, I now go around 50-51 mph tops. I have over 200 hours on the 4-stroke, no problems whatsoever. It is quiet, smooth and quick starting. I think it is a great engine but my purchase was based on economics. In my area the Johnson/Suzuki 4-stroke was around $2,500 less at the time. As previously stated, it is a beefed up, bored out, tricked out 115. It doesn't have the displacement of the Yamaha or Honda 150. As Suzuki advertises in promoting their larger engines; "there's no replacement for displacement". Although the "JohnSu" has a redline of 6200 RPM, the gear reduction is 2.38:1. I'm running a 14 X 24 SS prop.@ 6100 RPM's/50 MPH,GPS.<br /><br />Go to the engine manufacturers site and check out their performance bulletins. They have their engines tested on various different types of boats. Maybe you can find one similar to yours.
