I posted this about a month or so ago but i can't seem to find the old thread. I have a 1989 140 hp Evinrude. It starts and idles. When i got to give it WOT it acts like it wants to rev up then bogs down and wants to cut out if you throttle back it wont die and stays running . I just recently bought the motor to replace a 1989 70hp. I disconnected the VRO when i installed it on the boat. The line was plugged and wires were disconnected. I have tried to squeeze the primer while giving it WOT and it doesn't change the out come. I have replaced all of the fuel lines along with the fuel filters. I added a water separator filter also. The compression is good in all the cylinders. I pulled the high speed jets and ran a wire through them. I know a few people added a few other suggestions on the old thread that i can't seem to find. Any help is appriciated. Thanks

I'm not the expert that some on this forum are, but I'd pull the carbs and do a full cleaning.

The high speed jet could have been the culprit, but there are other places in the carb that would slow the fuel flow enough to cause those symptoms. I'd be checking the float position and the float valve. If the valve isn't opening all the way, either because the float doesn't drop far enough or because the passage is partially blocked, then the motor will be starved for fuel when you go to WOT.

But don't stop there. Clean the whole carburetor. Do it right, do it once.

After you answer racerone's question, here is another one. Have you tried it on a portable tank, with brand new freshly mixed fuel and a different hose and ball?

I would also pull the cover off the carbs and look down the throttle body to make sure the throttle plates are opening completely. I've seen a cable that was broken in the controller cause a similar problem.

I have not tried it on a portable tank yet. I just received my spark tester to measure the gap of the spark yesterday. The controls are off of my old motor and they worked fine on it. So I don’t think the cable is broke but I will check for sure. Thanks

Thank you! I tried to find it but I didn’t have any luck. I thought it might have got lost during the new changes.
