I have a 1982 140hp Johnson that I believe the idle is set too high. Can anyone tell me where it is best to adjust the idle RPM. I have a tach and I am going to check it and would like to know how and where to set it. I am told it should be around 1000 RPM at an idle in neutral.

Re: 140 hp setting idle RPM

I'm quoting from Clymer:
...should be performed with boat floating in water....connect tach, start engine and warm up....adjust idle adjustment screw (I'll explain) as required to set engine speed to 650 rpm in FORWARD gear

the idle screw is located to the right side of lever that's connected to timer base linkage. it's a long screw with a rubber stop on end. holla back if you need clarification

I do know the screw that you are talking about. However mine is screwed all the way in and is not making contact with the stop on the casing. I am assuming this means my likage is out of adjustment? Can anyone clarify this.

Thats what it sounds like. It's time for a synk & link adjustment on your linkage.

Do you have a service manual???

No I do not have a manual. Can you walk me throught the adjustments I will need to make? I was hoping I would not have to buy a manual to adjsut the idle

Your not just adjusting the idol, you are synkrizing (whatever) the timing, idol, WOT and max advance all at the same time.

To do it correctly you will need the manual.

Re: 140 hp setting idle RPM

I did some further looking and someone had adjusted the throttle cable way out so there was no tension on the cable or advance. I tightened this up to have tension. When I started out idel RPM was 1400 in neutral, 1050 in gear. I adjusted down to 650 in gear and it is running great. It has a lot more power in WOT which I did not notice a problem with prior to this.
Thanks for the heads up. Which manual is better Clymer or Seloc?

about 45 bucks, I just got one for mine from marineengine.com

it is specifically for your motor, trust me it's better than clymer and seloc put together
