140 Johnson stalled

I have a 1985 140. Recently I went out and the motor killed on me after two hours of running. I was going about 30MPH when this occurred. I tried to restart but it seemed like my battery was dead. Just a note, the cables to the battery were real warm and the fly was was hot. I went home and bought a new battery but the same problem. The solonoid does lift up. The problem is it turns over very slowly and sounds like the battery is dead. Is my starter bad? I heard something about a charging system. Could it be this(whatever the charging system is). Please give me some advise. I have no idea what is wrong. It was just rebuilt last year but is out of warranty. Thanks for any suggestions

Re: 140 Johnson stalled

Are all terminations clean AND tight (both (+) and (-))?

How did motor start before stopage? Sluggish cranking? Normal?

You can bypass solenoid with a auto jumper cable from battery (+) to starter (+). Does it crank normally or not? If it does, you've got a problem w/ the solenoid or keyswitch.

When you get motor running, you can check charging by measuring across battery terminals with a VOM. Should get ~ 14.5 VDC if charging circuit is working. Alternator consists of two main elements: stator (under flywheel) and voltage regulator/rectifier on top rear of engine.

Stator can be checked not running for continuity w/ a VOM. I think it should read ~ 0.2 ohm across the yellow leads. A shop manual will have the detail. There is also a running voltage check. I don't recall the AV volts for that. Both the rectifier and stator are expensive parts, so you want to be sure before replacing.

If you don't already have one, you need a shop manual if you want to do your own work.

Re: 140 Johnson stalled

Thanks for the reply. I cleaned off all the connectors and made sure they were tight. I got a little more power but not much at all.
As for a the jumper cable thing you suggested, I just put the +(battery) to the +(of starter)? Do I turn the key on or will it start by that. Do I need to ground the - of the jumper cable somewhere. Thanks for the help. After I try this I will let you know what I get.

By the way. The motor started fine when we went out. It was idled low but fine. The second time we started it started after two tries.

(+) to (+) jumper will crank immediately. Will try to start if ign key is "ON", won't if "OFF". Negative jumper not needed (unless you don't have a good engine gnd, but you checked this already, right?

I jumped the starter but it did not spin real fast. All it did was spark and turn slowly. Should I take the starter off and check it that way? What should the VOM read on the starter and solenoid? Thanks for the continued help.

If you have worker on elec motors and/or starter before, I would be inclined to check the brushes and commutator. Otherwise, have an elec motor shop check it out.

You may need a new/rebuilt starter, worst case.
