I have a 1989 Evinrude 140, the only problem I seam to have is a low idle speed. I did the link and sync asper the service manual. there seams to be no idle speed adjustment for this modle. It idle around 450 to 500 rpm wear it stall sometimes. Am I doing something wrong in the link and sync or just missing something simple. Thanks for the help

your idle should be set at 650 rpm while in gear under load (on the water). Is there not an idle adjustment screw on the looper?

Re: 140 looper idle problem

My 1985 looper idles at around the 600 mark in neutral.
3 possible other issues.
Healthy spark.
Fuel delivery.
Compression.
Do the simplest first and go from there.

Re: 140 looper idle problem

Look on the starboard side just below the flywheel. That large plastic knob with the locking nut is how you set up the idle. Unscrew it to back off on the spring which will allow the timer base to advance which will increase the idle rpm.

Also look on the port side under the flywheel. There may be an idle stop screw there too. If releasing the spring tension doesn't move the timer base, turn that stop screw in. That will advance the timer base.

Do not adjust the idle with that screw in the throttle arm on the side of the block. That'll throw off all the sync & link you just did.

Thanks for all the info. I will recheck the compression (was good in the spring), I know spark is good, rebuilt the carbs in the spring all is good there. Will redo the sync and link and recheck base timing and go from there.
