I was running my boat today just to start it up cause i have not ran it for a while. It ran fine. When i shut it down and let it sit for a few i checked the oil and noticed the level was high andthe ol smelled like gas and was very thin. What could have caused this? It was a little hard to start and i did prime it about 5 times. Can this hurt the rings? i let it run about 10 minutes.
Thank you for your time. Mike

Pretty sure that bad rings will cause that if you flood your engine. You should probably do a compression test.

Motor was rebuilt and only has about 8 hours on it. It has a mechanical feul pump that is about 2 years old but only used this season. Hope the rings arent bad that would mean a rebuild all over again. Theres no other way the gas could have got in the crank? Thanx mike

I motored from the dock to the trailer and the oil got gassy smelling but did not raise. Next time I took it for a run, it evaporated the gas smell.

I think if yours raised, the same theory hold true with cars also, your diaphram on the fuel pump is probably leaking into the oil. Often the pump will still pump up to spec but flood the oil.

I had an injection pump rebuilt on my diesel truck. At the same time the lift pump went bad. Fuel in oil big time, it was such perfect timing I thought the shaft seal on the freshly rebuilt inj pump was mis-installed. So I pulled it off to find it perfect. It was the diaphram, had a pinhole in it.

Re: 140 merc gas in oil

Thank you men, i was talking with a friend and he said when i prime it and it dont start and then keep priming it the gas dont burn off so it leaks into the crankcase. If this was so, then the rings would be bad correct? Ill change the pump and oil and try it out. I had this happen befor i got the engine to run in the first place. The gas wont hurt the bearings hopefully. Well, thanks alot for the input. By the way i have a spare fuel pump due to a misdiagnosis in the passed so ill give that a try. It turned out to be the carb.

I'm pretty sure its the pump. If the rings were bad your engine would smoke really bad.
