Hi, I have a problem with my 1979 Merc. 140 6 cyl.
After I get it started, I can idle out of the no wake zone, but when I attempt to accelerate, I can only open the throttle a little bit or the engine will slow down and eventually die, I can keep the engine running at about 2000 RPM indefinately and sometimes it will eventually climp to about 3000 rpm after a few minutes. Once it does this, I can open the throttle wide and it takes off as if nothing was ever wrong. As long as I keep it revving, it runs great. If I idle down for a few minutes and then hit the throttle again, the same problem occurs. It seems as if the engine is fouling out or something. The reccomended spark plugs are the surface-gap type, which I have read are bad for low speed operation,
and they are alwaye wet when I pull them out. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, John

Re: 140 MERC wont rev up

My Merc 140 (79) does the same thing sometimes (Not very often though) I thought it was the not getting enough fuel, so I go back and squeeze the bulb and that usually solves it for my motor. Hope this helps with your motor.

Craig
