1.check if you have spark
2.if you have spark then you are not getting fuel for some reason mabey the choke is not closeing if you remove the flame arestor you can see the choke and if you have some help they can pump the gas while you look and see if the acc pumps are putting in any fuel
3.how old is your fuel did you stablize it for the winter

tommays

Make sure that the point are gapped correctly, and yes the spark plug needs to be against the block or a grounded metal piece away from the carb. I do not recommend holding it with you bare hand as it can jolt you. I use insalated pliers to check mine. I do know people who can hold them in there hard and not get shocked But I am not one of them and it does not feel good at all

Every mechanic needs to be shocked by a plug wire. Sort of a rite of passage. Used to tell the young guys, "Here hold this and tell me if you see a spark while I crank it".

Re: 140 MERC WONT START

ok got the babe to run.. i did the basics.. i changed the plugs. checked the gap on the pooints. and then had someone turn the engine over while i checked for spark, then checked for the 2 small jhets of gas going into the carb while pushing full throttle. everything looked fine. then turned the key and amazingly she coughed and turned over. making me look like a total idiot to my uncle that came over to help turn the key while i did the checking. so anyway now i have another problem. i noticed water coming out of the engine where the starter goes into the engine. it stopped and then when i gave it throttle more came out and then it slowly stiopped. i dont see any more water coming out but am a lil concerned it looks like there is a seal or gasket there.. should water come out of there. and if not why.. i also listed this as a new problem under water leak merc 140 so if anyone knows they can answer here and there.. thanks again
