i got a tap on my motor when its idle at first it sounded like the water pump so i changed it and it is still there. I thinnk it sounds like it is coming from the crank pulley. Also, im not getting a reading on my oil pressure gauge i never did since i replaced the engine. I ve been running it alot and it seems good accept for that little tap when it idles. Im not sure if the gauge is bad is it possible that i dont have oil pressure. i would think it would have siezed it ran about 2 hours so far. what should i do to try and eliminate this tap?

Hook up a remote pressure gauge to see what the oil pressure is. Go from there. But, if you had no op the engine would be toast by now. Could be wiring, gauge, or sending unit.

Before you get too far into the mechanical systems make sure the tapping is not coming from the Exhaust Shutter valve. Those will make noise at Idle when they are getting old and the rubber wears away. The shutter is located in the exhaust tube right under the boot that connects the elbow to the tube. Use a piece of hose or something as a stethoscope and listen around.

Could be valve lash also.

i never did since i replaced the engine.

Ayuh,... Did you adjust the Valves when installing the new motor,..??

If it isn't Valve adjustment,...
It could be the fuel pump tappet....

that quote was read wrong i is really it meaning the oil gauge. no i never messed with any valves i got the complete engine and put it in its a plug and play only i had to replace just about everything from my old moyor accept for the internals and i still havent had a chance to play yet anyway the tap seems like it is coming from the opposite side of the engine but then again it might be the feul pump is it supposr to tap? the engine seems to run great. the fuel pump is new after market only maybe 4 hours on it. can i adjust the vaves is it a big job would it involve pulling the head?

Ayuh,... You pull the Valve Cover,... The Valves are On/ In the Head....

You need alot more learnin' than I'm going to type out with my single digit....
A quick google search should bring up such a basic task rather easily......;)

The fuel pump is driven by the Cam, with a Tappet,...
Depending on the spring pressure, sometimes there's some Tapping...

The reason I am guessing Exhaust Shutter is your explanation above about it being at Idle. I would still use a hose or something and figure out exactly where it is coming from. Boat parts are not something you want to replace until you fix something. The shutter is in the back of the engine on the passenger's side.

Might save you some trouble.

I know where the valves are. My question was how do i adjust them? I have a good understanding about this motor. I stripped the old one and basically put this one together by swapping different parts. I replaced the fuel pump last week and i can clearly hear that it is not coming from there. Im just asking questions so i can learn. If it seems to stupid for you than just ignore it there is no need to belittle a simple question that i ask and then not even answer it correctly. Im not trying to be a d***k but this forum is to help and be helped by other fellow boaters at least i think thats what it is here for. Sorry if i sound like a doosh! Im just trying to get my boat running correctly. It means alot to me. I got it when it was basically worthless and now its gonna actually be seaworthy very soon and i got this far by the help of guys on this forum including you previously, so thats how i feel and if you dont want to help me out anymore i understand. Thank You Mike

Re: 140 mercruiser engine tap

Get a long screw driver. Connect 1 end to your ear. Connect the other end to the engine. Move around until the sound is the loudest. This will help us figure out where your problem might be.

If it's the loudest on the valve cover, valve related.

If it the loudest on the fuel pump cover, voila (Watch out for the belts!)

That kinda thing...

Oh, yeah, re valve lash, it's an adjustment to take almost all of the slack out of the pushrod system. Too much slack and the parts hit, causing a click.

The are many ways to do this, but the recommended procedure is in the manuals under the adults only sticky.

Thank you for your input, i appreciate it very much. However wouldnt the tap come from the back of the motor than? Or is it possible that it could still sound like it is coming from the front of the engine. Thats why i ruled that out because itactually sounds like it is the water pump but it isnt. Thats why im begining to think that it is a valve on the head thats exactly where it sounds like its coming from. I just need to find out how to adjust it now. thank you for your time and knoweledge.

Re: 140 mercruiser engine tap

Pull the valve cover, start motor, stick a section of fuel hoes in your ear and listen by touching each rocker arm with the other end.The tapping can also be a wrist pin getting loose.
