i have a 1980 mercruizer 140. i recently drained the oil and was trying to refill it when i realized i can not get back in the same ammount that came out even though the new oil is level with the fill hole. it says in the manual that the lowerunit oil will maintain a proper level if the upper is filled. Will oil fill in all of the space only when the drive is engaged? so far i can only get about 3/4 of a quart in it before it overflowed. any help is appreciated

thanks -adam

the new oil is level with the fill hole

sounds like your filling from the vent hole. the fill hole is the drain hole. you'd fill if from the bottom up, till it spills out the vent hole. if it's like my modle 1 drive. i suppose ya have a alpha1 and think the procedure is the same....
