I pre-apologize for the length of this post??

I have a 1977 omc 140 in an 18? Starcraft Holiday. Over the past few years, one lifter had been getting quite noisy. Last fall I changed the lifter and all of the lifter noise went away and the motor ran perfect. So this spring, I decided to change the remaining lifters. Up until this point, this motor ran great except for the lifter noise.

Before I changed the lifters I tried to start the boat just to get everything going and warmed up. No such luck. After a new starter solenoid and making sure (or so I thought) the motor was running as before, I proceeded with the lifter change and adjusted valves.

Since I have done this, I haven?t been able to get the motor to run properly. I started with timing, the best I could get is about 8 (spec is 4 deg before TDC), then it quits. The cap, rotor, coil, wires and plugs were new last year. Just to be sure I installed new points (gapped and checked dwell per specs), condenser, and resistor. Next, I inspected the carburetor and found that the accelerator pump boot had a slight blemish, so I bought the rebuild kit and put it back together. I also re-checked valve adjustment.

I really thought I had it at this point but no luck. It would run, but not right. So, I broke down and took it to the local marine shop and explained everything I had done. He called and told me that everything I had done was correct but he found two bad plugs. He changed them and set timing. The plugs were a year old??but okay, its working?..chalk one up to a bad plug or maybe a little stubbornness on my part.

I take the boat out, and to my surprise, it ran great, for a while. However, I noticed that the motor would miss at ? WOT to WOT on 1) a long run 2) when I turned on the blower and bilge, or 3) when I used the motor trim.

I took the alternator in and had it tested (was good). After I put the alternator back on I checked voltage with a meter to be sure the boat gauge wasn?t lying, this was good as well. Just for fun, I checked the timing one more time?..8 degrees. Maybe I did have a couple bad plugs, it did run better when I got it back, but something still isn?t right.

At this point I am at the end of my knowledge and very frustrated. What am I missing? Timing gear? This boat is starting to look like a parts depot for the Starcraft thread......

Any help is appreciated and thanks for reading.
