140 or 165

Hi, I just bought my first boat. Its a 1987 Sea Ray 18.5ft. It has the 3.7l mercruiser. I,ve found online that if it has the 2 barrel its 140 horse. And if it has the 4 barrel its 165. I only have the 2 on it yet my registration says 165. So is it safe to assume my Reg. is wrong?

welcome,you have a 165...with the 4barrel it is considered a 175...hope it helps

Ayuh,.... The 140hp is a Totally different motor....

Thanks for the replies. Guess I was looking in the wrong places for info. Glad its the 165. Just fired it up today. Sounds like it runs pretty good. Taking it out for the first time in the morning.

Before for take it out for the first time:
Download the manual and read it first
Test it in your driveway
Check the outdrive oil level
Check all battery connections
Replace fuel sep, if equipped
Drain plug in place.
Fill with fresh fuel

You'll be Wishing it was a 140hp...
The 3.0ls will run Forever,.... 470s rarely do...
