The motor worked great for a few trips this season. All of a sudden one day it started to not want to stay running while idleing. It coughs or sneezes and stalls out. I took the carbs apart and blew them out with the compressor but I didn't have anymore Carb cleaner. We reseated all the fuel lines put the carbs back on and no change. I have spark on all cilynders checked with spark tester. I bought a new fuel line and ball, tried running from a red tank instead of the boat tank. No change. We took it out one more time and it would still stall on idle. At higher RPM's or when the boat is undrway it works and sounds fine. What else to check? I'm waiting to borrow a compression tester and have to find my book to check the link and sync. Any other ideas?

Your carbs need to be cleaned thoroughly using a compressor to blow things free doesn't cut it. Get the rebuild kits remove all off the welch plugs and clean all of the passages and put it them back together. Also if you aren't using a fuel filter/ water separator for your built in tank get one.

Carbs were rebuilt last season, New fuel/water separator this season. When I meant blew out with compressor I took everything apart removed all jets and put blow gun against every whole and jet that was in there the same way I did when I rebuilt them last year. Do I really need to get new rebuild kits again? I will try again with some carb cleaner or carb dip ( if I can find it)

sounds like carb are still clogged soak for awhile then use a wire or welding tip cleaner something that will fit in jets trust me i learnt the hard way i thought just soaking and spraying and using comnpressed air would do the trick it didn't i use a tip cleaner soaked again then blew out boat works great again
just my 2 cents!

Thanks I will try that. I use a small piece of wire from a wire brush and some solid 30 awg to clean my motorcycle carbs I guess the same should apply here.

Just to close this out. I rebuilt the carbs again and still the same problem only it wouldn't even raise the RPM's. I went and bought a compression tester and no compression in one cylinder. I pulled the head and the piston was fried and so was the head. The other three cylinders had 130 psi. Luckily I have an `89 120 that came with the boat that just needed a pwr pack. I'll see if I can get a new head and rebuild it over the winter.
