Good afternoon everyone. Thought my project was coming to an end; had the bottom end and bearings replaced on my 140 over the winter, everything is back together, and engine was test fired for just a brief minute to make sure everything was in order before putting in back in the boat. But now that the new gimbal is in, The outdrive is back on, and everything is plumbed and wired when I go to start it I just get a clink from the starter. I was able to jump terminals at the starter and you could hear it free spin but then when I tried to jump to the yellow terminal that should push the Bendix and spinet all I get is a clink. I tried to turn the engine by hand But I don’t have good access to it crank bolt. It’s hard to think that the engine was suddenly freeze up when it was completely free right before being put back into the boat? Last I tried to jump the terminals on the starter all it did was bark at me so I think best case and Scenario it would just be a bad starter?

Ayuh,..... The motor didn't have a drive hooked to it before,......

Did ya feed it water when ya run it,..?? if so, pull the plugs, 'n look for water,.....

Could be the starter itself, or it's wirin' too,......

Didn’t have it hooked to water when test fired. Only ran it long enough to make sure there was combustion and no oil leaks. So it was shut off after only about 1 minute. -and yeah, no drive on it when tested. To add to that drive was free when removed and was stored upright in a dry garage. -so no reason to blame the drive

take starter to auto zone and have them test it. If its bad they have the replacement for $55..thats where I got me a new one.

Sure sounds like a starter issue

tried to turn the engine by hand But I don’t have good access to it crank bolt

Don't do that, it can snap the bolt off

No test needed here. Looks like the housing cracked; presumably it hit something while installing

Ayuh,..... The most likely cause of such a thing is tryin' to turn over a locked up motor,.....

I doubt you could beat it badly enough to break it like that, just installin' it,.....

Scott that is correct.. I forgot to mention that. I purchase the boat with the motor not running so i went with a starter to just get it to turn over and get the motor running.

Well the starter has been replaced but still having the same problem. Turn the key and just “clank” and a buzz as long as I hold the key. The + and - cables to the battery are getting pretty daggum hot while this is going on. I pulled the drive completely off and removed the plugs too. -same issue.
I will say the only thing different from the time I test fired it to the time it went in the boat was the triangle shaped engine coupler; originally it had the small round style but I swapped it for the triangle one, then put the cover on and in it went. Are there clearance issue maybe I’m not aware of with these different kind of couplers?

if you have the drive off and she still wont turn over.......your motor is locked up. or your coupler is hitting your bell housing

pull motor and start tearing it apart.

with the rockers backed off and plugs out, you should be able to turn the motor by hand by grabbing the flywheel or belts

Just blows my mind that it would suddenly be froze up after starting right before installing. God, I hope it’s just an interference issue with the bell housing

Bondo, looks like you fielded a similar issue like this regarding the same year boat (‘81) back in 2010; hope you’re still right.

Edges of the coupler and the bolts are hitting the bellhousing(?) tried to turn the crank over by hand and take the edges down using a dremel. I got 2 out of 3 but that last one it stuck good. I started breaking bolts off in the balancer using a pry-bar so it’s back to plan B. Pull the engine, trim and test fit, then back into the boat. -certainly beats a seized situation
