1400 replace needle valve/starter maint questions

Per advice from you folks I ordered a needle valve kit for a carb on my 1400 that was puking gas.

Got this off the carb after removing the starter. I see two little spring loaded arms and a brass nut. Do the arms come off or do I just finagle the nut off somehow? Any advice for a dummy on how far to screw in the replacement?

Second question: now that the starter is off, is there any simple maintenance I should do to it? It works OK but is probably original.

You need to remove the pin holding the top lever (I use a small punch to tap it out the opposite direction, one end will be knurled and one not) , then the lever comes off then the bottom one should swing out of the way to give you access to the seat. Set the height of the arms one you replaced the needle and seat , the specs should be in the kit. It was either puking gas due to a bad needle and seat, bad float or misadjustment of the float height. I hope they are the new style black floats instead of cork. When you reinstall the carb DO NOT overtighten the bolt that holds the tower on (the tower is the cover over the filter that the gas line goes into) or you will break the tower, be sure to replace the filter and the cork gaskets and don't forget to replace the brass oring under the idle air orifice tube.




If the starter works, leave it alone.

Thank you - I will use a punch and replace the needle. Makes sense.

Beside it, top center in the carb , looks like a slotted screw.
