I have a 1986 Evenrude 140hp. Last couple trips my it died at low trolling speeds just sputtered out like it ran out of gas. I used the kicker to troll for 30 minutes, and the main motor started back up and ran fine all the way back to the dock 10 miles or so. Yesterday the same symptoms putting out of the harbor the motor died and would not restart. I kicked it back to the dock and after looking at the fuel line I thought it might be a fuel filter so I changed that out and went out motor ran fine all day.
Today took the boat out putted out of the harbor fine and was running at 25mph out to the fishing grounds and about a mile from the harbor the motor cut out (felt like someone pulled the kill switch). We could not get it restarted so kicked it back in and I?m now trouble shooting it.
First thing I pull all the plugs they were all fouled wet. I flamed them and put them back in with one out and turned the motor over and there was a faint spark for a second then nothing. No spark on any of the plugs. I was thinking it would be the coil but I see that each cylinder has its own coil so I was wondering what could cause this. The faint spark comes and goes which makes me think this is the issue some electrical part is going bad and caused the issues on the water.
I just replaced the rectifier a few months ago. I?m not too good with electrical but the faint spark makes me think it?s the littlie black box that all the coil wires go into. It sits on top of the rectifier housing . I think it?s called a limiter or something part says CD4/8 -67C on it. Thank for any help electrical issues are not my strong side.
