I have a 14'6" Trailorboat that doesn't have the hull number or anything... Tried doing searches but couldn't find a thing about it... Only thing I find are the teardrops....

Anyways, right now the boat has an old 81 15hp Seaking outboard and I plan to get a larger outboard... I was wondering if anyone knew what the max. HP outboard I can use so I know where to start? Would an 80hp Mercury be too much for it?

Re: 14'6" Trailorboat Question about outboard

Trailorboat was made in San Rafael, Ca in the 50's and 60's. It was bought out by Klamath boats and all of the fiberglass molds were destroyed as the company then focused on aluminum boats.
They made two models that might be yours...one was listed as a 14' (68" beam) and the other was 15' (74"beam).
The hull design is typical 50's with a shallow v entry, flat stern and rounded chines.
The 14' was limited to 40 -45 horse while the 15' was rated to 70horse.
Growing up my dad had both a 14' with a 35hp Merc 300 (4 cylinder 1960) that would run about 26 -28 mph with 2 people on board and a 15' with a 1958 Mark 58 (45hp) that really screamed at 33 mph with 1 person (airguide speedometer). It is my opinion that 80hp would be too much for either boat. Make sure that the transom is not dry rotted as this was a problem with the boats.
Good luck
