Hello everyone.

As some of you may know, I will be building a hydroplane for this summer but to help fund, I thought I would make some money to pay for everything that I will need because I want to do it properly. I would just like to thank everyone that posted especially "oops" for their help.

Right, to make me some money, I bought a 14ft Shakespeare with a 50hp mercury blueband on a road trailer. Now, here is a link to it

As you can see, the pictures show the paintwork is rather poor and I want to repaint it a bright cherry red colour.

That is a picture of a chevvy but the colour I will be painting.

The boat is fibreglass obviously and I need to know how to paint it. I have had a look at a few resources on tinternet but they seem to say different things and I can't get a grip on what I should and shouldn't be doing! Thing is its already got paint on and I don't know about primers.

What I've got so far...

1. Rub down, sandpaper get a matt surface and get any major dents out.
2. Prime it with a white undercoat, 2 or 3 coats
3. Put a top coat on 2 or 3 coats of my chosen colour :D:D
4. ???????

Is this right, I have no idea. Any brands would also be good.
Im only 16 so I have little experience of painting boat, I did a 8' dinghy last year but that was more of a large touch up job.

I've got a spray gun but never used it so might fix that up somehow. I have got orbital and belt sanders.

Any advice would be useful, thanks

was it down really well, get rid of all glossy areas, wipe down with actone, go for it. get some cardboard and practice spray paint on it. light spray, you spray side to side, and stop the paint before you stop your hand, or the paint will lap or run. try it on Mom Car first. LOL.

i would love to have that boat in the US.

prime your filler, then go for it. a light wet sand between coats.

I was planning so sand those out as there are no major dints.

Re: 14ft Shakespeare fibreglass painting question

So there is no need for primer at all. Ill just sand down a bit to get the gloss off and get a matt surface. Then spray boat paint topcoat. Sand between each coat. Once it looks good, do i need to coat in some sort of lacquer??
Sorry for all the questions but I want to get this right first time! Thanks

never hurts to put a clear coat or 2, that is compatible with your paint.

Clear coats aren't needed for most marine (boat) paints, but can make some dark colors look better. Don't use clears over light colors because they tend to yellow and make the finish look worse. I wouldn't use a clear because it will add cost and time that you may not be able to recover when you sell it.

ok then, thanks

Also, does anyone know about thinners? I have seen some blakes one pack red paint. Is it thinner no.1 that I need? I understand a thinner is needed for use with a spray gun

Re: 14ft Shakespeare fibreglass painting question

you are correct thinner is needed for spraying. it depends on the paint you are using, use what the manufacturer recommends for thinner.

Thanks. Boat is being delivered Sunday so I can have a proper inspection to see if there is any major damage to fibreglass. Thanks everyone!
