Hi JS

How does it run otherwise? Is the only problem when trolling or low speed? Try pumping the bulb when it starts to die and see if this helps...

Re: 15 horse joohnson

Thanks Rick,
noticed that the bulb seemed to get softer as motor sat ideling in tank and when it was pumped the rpm came up. Replaced old tank and hose, but then it will not run. In the past, (on the water) when it begins to cut out, it will run irratically in high speed, and then seem to clear, but then after returning to slow trolling speed, will run for a bit and then go back to stalling. ??

The primer bulb does not stay firm after the engine starts. That's normal. It should not be sucked flat however. I agree that if squeezing the primer bulb causes the engine to pick up there is a fuel pump problem. Check for air leaks on the fuel lines at the engine. Make sure the vacuum line that runs the fuel pump is ok, or if the fuel pump is bolted over a pulse port on the engine that the gasket between the crankcase and the fuel pump is ok. Loose mounting screws can cause the pump to cease pumping fuel.

this motor has around 2,500 hours trolling time. would you say that it is worth chaising my problems with a tech at $80/hr, will it be worth running when and if we find the problem, or is it time to cut bait and buy a replacement? opinion please

Give it a compression check .If it checks good and
if it runs strong except for the apparent fuel supply problem get it serviced. If you rebuilt the carb you certainly can do the fuel pump.

The general concensus is fuel pump. They are rebuildable, and not overly expensive it you just want to buy one.A compression check is always a greatway to know how your engine is doing,I agree though it;s not your problem here.As for your fuel hose, the one from tank to engine. There is an O-ring in the fitting that often goes bad, usually a gas leak will detect it,but it is also a wear item that could allow air to be sucked in.It's the fuel pump.
