15 hp Evinrude impeller retaining pin.

Changed my impeller today on my 1986 Evinrude 15hp. I bought a full kit with housing, and used the retaining pin in the kit. didn't seem to have any problem sliding the impeller down over the pin. Later, I was watching a video about using those kits, with parts in them for several different motors, and it mentioned that the pin in that kit was not for my specific 15hp.
Now I'm second guessing my installation. Running it in a tank of water will tell the tale, but would that short run damage the motor? Afraid the pin dould wind up down in the gear box.
Thoughts?

The pin can not go down into the gear box.--------Utube videos are not always done by experts.-------Did you confirm that the pin would spin the impeller before you installed the pump housing on to it ???

No,I did not, and I don't know how to either, Could you shed some light for me?

Well, I put the motor in the the tank, even though I was fairly confident I had the impeller in place over the pin. I started it up, but after just a couple seconds with no water, I panicked and shut it down, and pulled the L/U again. lifted the impeller slightly, didn't see if under, but heard it fall out. So I measured the new pin against the old pin, and then carefully watched the impeller slide down on the pin. Put everything back together, and between last night and today, have the whole L/U pulling, shift linkage engagement part down pat, LOL.
Put it back in the tank, started it up, and after a few seconds, started a healthy stream. Now, I'm thinking maybe I shut the motor down just a couple seconds too soon,

At least this time, I know I got it right.

Always better to be sure then sorry. You learned something through that experience. And so it wasn't wasted time or effort in my opinion. And with that new bit of knowledge, you too can answer questions on how to change the impellor on that type engine now. That is what makes these forums so great. The combined experiences we all share with others... :thumb:

Well, one install hardly makes me an expert, but if I see something and the real experts don't chime in, (which I doubt) I'll offer my 2 cents. Yes, I learned a lot this past two days.
