I have a 1977 15 HP Johnny that I recently took apart (termostat, water pump, etc.). Now, she won't start. It "pops" and "sputters" like it wants to go. I think the needle valve setting is what's stopping it from starting. I have it open about 3 and a half turns. Can anyone tell me if this is a good setting to start at and anything else that I should be looking for?
Thanks,
Stalker

Hi Stalker,

Are you talking about the low speed mixture control? That's the one with a knob sitting next to the manual choke control, that rotates, with a stop so that it can only rotate one full circle.

Each motor is different, but if yours is typical, try setting this knob just half a turn open to begin with. To do this, pull the knob half off, and you can wind the adjustment fully home. then back it off half a turn before pushing ther plastic knob fully home again.

Three and a half turns sounds excessive, but you may find that you'llneed a shade more than half a turn as the motor gets warmed up.

That's the one. I'll try it at a half turn and then one and a half if that doesn't work.
Stalker
