Hi everyone, 1998 15 hp Johnson outboard and the center knob for the friction setting for the throttle control mechanism has twisted out. I am not able to get this back in and feel something has broke. Is there a parts breakdown on-line anywhere so I can get an idea of how this works before I disassemble it? Many thanks for any help. Dave...

Re: 15 hp Johnson twist grip problem.

I can help I think. I just went through this on an 80 7 1/2 Johnson.
If you can get on the OMC web-site they have pictures of this mess that you can look at. Personally I wish they had kept with the old time proven star wheel tiller control setup. It worked for years. Cost me about 80 bucks to get mine up and running.

Re: 15 hp Johnson idle adjustment problem!

Re: 15 hp Johnson idle adjustment problem!

Just what I was looking for, Thanks Rick & River Boy. The part that I have in my hand is called an Idle adjustment. I thought it was a friction adjustment. The idle adjustment seems to go in a Helix and I'm not sure how all the works. Has anyone had one of these apart before to explain how it works. The motor seems to idle fine so I'm not quite sure what I'm getting into. Maybe someone could explain before I tear it down. Many thanks, Dave...

Re: 15 hp Johnson twist grip problem.

Under the throttle grip are two halves, (look at your OMC pics). On the inside of the halves are spirals like the inside of a rifle barrel. (I guess this would be the inverted 'helix'). Two 'buttons' ride in the spirals. Attached to the two buttons is the throttle cable which is attached to the advance plate and carburetor. Clear as mud? When I put mine back together I used some grease from the dealer that he said wouldn't eat up plastic. If you screw the idle adjustment all the way in you should be able to take/slide the twist grip and helix halves off with it (idle adjustment) in place on the tiller arm. Then you can deal with the idle adjustment. Good luck, it's not a pretty sight.

Oh yeah, there should be a detent button somewhere around the base of the twist grip that you push in and the twist grip will slide off/forward. Be sure you've got the idle adjustment screwed clockwise all the in so you don't pull it off with the twist grip.
