Hello gentlemen, i have an alumacraft v14 boat, and i can either get a mercury 20 hp or a suzuki 15 hp, i would like to know
what will be the best option for me, around three people will go out in our fishing trips, first person=200 lb, second person=245 lb and a kid around 120 lb, we are not planning to go hauling a..ss but enough power to move us around nicely. so in your opinion what will be the best choice?

ps: according to alumacraft website the max allowed on that boat is 20 hp
the merc motor is carbureted and the suzuki fuel injection.

Re: 15 hp or 20 hp

With that load, you'll want the 20 to push you. Also check your max. weight: with passengers at 565 lb. and the motor around another 100 lbs., plus fuel & gear, you may already be pushing the weight limit capacity of the 14 footer. I'm not familiar with that particular model. Just make sure you don't overload. Be safe & have fun!

Since both engines are Japanese made, brand doesn't matter. It never hurts to power the hull with the maximum rated horsepower. If you don't need it, don't use it. BUT when you do need it, it is there. Go with the 20.

That boat and that load even the 20hp may be underpowered. Look at the props with that load. You'd want the biggest diameter with the smallest pitch for the best performance.
