i have an 04 150 4 stroke with around 250 hours on it. i just checked the oil and it was way over the full mark on the dipstick, smelled of fuel and was fairly flamable. i changed the oil at the beginning of the season and it was at the correct level. any ideas? i certainly hope there is a simple remedy as the engine runs flawlessly and with plenty of power. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Re: 150 4 stroke making oil

my quess your idling or trolling a lot. couple things to do yamaha says full on oil is half way in the cross hatchings on the dip stick this little bit less oil will let the oil get hotter and burn off gas and water the get in the oil from running at slow speeds for a long time the other thing to do is to get the boat on plain and run it at the higher end of rpm range 5000-6000rpm for 10-15 min every trip some times longer if trolling for hours
this is a common problem with all four stroke i've found best thing to do warm up the oil

i was also told that yamaha recomends ring free as a fuel additive to keep fuel from bypassing the rings and going into the oil. ddoes anybody use this or is there a less expensive additive that does the same thing? ring free is pretty costly, especially using it as a shock treatment the first time.

Redtech is right on....service bulletin came out a while back from Yamaha....I use about 2/3 or slightly less on stick...115 is the worst for growing oil but 150 does a good bit too...it's just that these engines run a lot cooler compared to other four cycle engines...run the engine at speed coming in each trip and it'll lessen the effect
