150 black max sounds like its running on 3-4 cyl and runs hot with lots of water

150 (brown stripes so I'm guessing its 1987 vintage maybe 1985) black max sounds like its running on 3-4 cyl and runs hot with lots of water. I think that the cyl problem is coils but don't really know. i have no idea what the cooling problem is because theirs TONS on water coming out the tell tale. Please help! the engine is new to me and when i bought it he said he had it running 2 weeks ago and it was running great with tons of power. I'm guessing he was a dirty, filthy, rotten, scoundrel.

Well yo can start with spark tests to make sure your getting fire at all plugs if that checks out fine I would do a compression test. If that turns. Out good then you need to make sure the carbs are all getting fuel if that turns out ok then you might need a impeller Tstats and poppet valve replaced. Note that if it's running on 3 cyclinders that's probly why it's over heating check this stuff and repost

Ps the old black max sound like a dragon waking up so not uncommon that it sounds like that lol
