I have a 96 johnson 150 fast strike and was just told by my dealer that I lost a cylinder, made my day! Ive got the option to rebuild or new motor and I dont have the $ for new motor but I did some looking and found that johnsons are famous for loosing #1 cylinder even after being rebuilt is this true? In some cases it happend many times to same motor. so should I rebuild and chance it or get a loan and buy a merc? Any advice would be appreciated thanks. p.s. I really want a johnson! help

Re: 150 fast strike lost cylinder

Hey sikpnter...

Don't know about the "famous" brand stuck on the engine. I've done a few and seems it wasn't any cylinder in particular that went out. Just boils down to good care and maint. If your shop does the work, talk to them about what the scope of the work will include. Got to be a reason that the cylinder went out in the first place. Will they be rebuilding the carbs with the overhaul? It's a good idea to do that. Will the ignition system be checked for good spark to all cylinders at all speed ranges? Will they follow up with a 20hr check after the rebuild? The 60degree blocks are a solid design in my opinon. But like anything else, care and maint is required. Keep us posted.

Re: 150 fast strike lost cylinder

I pampered this motor. I did everything that the manual says for maint and storage procedures, even drove my wife nuts that I was such a freak about maintinance. My dealer is leaning towards the oil pump going out, but hes not sure until he tears into it more. Is the oil pump on that motor electric or manual? does anyone know? Because for some reason at the time of burndown my tack was bouncing all over and my warning horn did nothing then it acted like I had a dead battery, it wouldnt turn over. thanks.

sikpntr,

If your dealer thinks the oil pump caused one cylinder to go bad, he's an idiot. Don't let him touch your engine.

The oil is injected before the fuel gets to the carburetors. If the oil pump fails, the whole engine destroys itself.

More than likely, you had one carburetor lean out.

he checked compression first thing and cylinder #1 had none and the rest were ok he said so he pulled head and saw the damage to cyl wall I even saw and felt the grooves. He said that they were at the bottom of sleve which led him to belive loss of oil.

sik...if you get a short block, every thing is there except the carbs, flywheel and electrical systems and linkages.
