I've done a bit of research on this series because I own one and I'm trying to find out the same thing. Overall, I've seen positive comments. I've had a 96 model 175 Fast Strike since it was new and the only trouble I had for the 7-8 years or so was the relays on the power trim not raising the motor up. You can swap relays between the up and down to get you back to land. After that I've rebuilt the carbs two times because of fuel leaks about 5-6 years apart. At 14 years I had the lower unit resealed by a dealer and within 6 months it scattered?? I replaced it with an aftermarket unit. I'm having trouble with the OIS ignition system now at random and might have to replace the power pack or other parts for the first time. I also have a few external water leaks around the cylinder head that I posted yesterday and it looks like it will be easy to fix. I think that?s a short list for a 17 year old motor that?s used every year. It's a strong running motor and the "Fast strike" series has some performance features the standard motors don't have (as I understand) in the carbs, intake, exhaust and power trim. There's a bit of arguments out there about the differences. Overall, it may be the best years for the "Fast Strike" series but don?t look for high gas mileage. I'm looking to upgrade an older 140HP Evinrude on another boat I have and I would buy another 175 in a minute if the price was right.

I've read the early 90's - 94 or so had some problems with the block cracking and water getting into the #1 cylinder but not a chronic problem. I've also read to stay away from the newer "Ficht" series that came out in the late 90"s. For the most part the "Fast Strike" series are not "Ficht's" and some say never were, but I've seen a picture posted of a late 90"s model "Fast Strike - Ficht". That year model you mentioned is close to the Ficht series so I would say just make sure it's not one. Most agree that the Ficht is what broke OMC.

Hope this helps.

If it's a Ficht model defineatly stay away from it. The carbed models were okay but not the dfi ones. I agree, that Ficht was the downfall of OMC.

If you have to mix your fuel 50:1 that's better yet. To many probs with those vro's.

Re: 150 fast strike

I took the boat out and it ran good Iwent to wot and it was at 6000 rpms does that sound good for a 18 foot stratros looked to be going about 60 to 65 mph steering cables were tight so took them out by the hardest going to get new ones hope they go in easier then they came out.

Re: 150 fast strike

If you're getting 6000 rpm with just you in the boat and lightly loaded, that's good. Steering cables are always a bi#%$h.

Re: 150 fast strike

I am in the market for a 175. I just picked up a 150 hp model( intruder ,same motor but its an Evinrude) that is supposed to have low comp in one hole...but for $200 it was a great deal super super clean..fresh water bass boat motor. I got the 150 for a parts supply motor. I see the 150 and 175 hp motors selling for $2000 at a low to $4,000!!!!!!!!!! so if your motor has great compression and runs like you say you almost got the boat for free.... the intruder and fast strike models are rated for more RPM, and it is SAID they put out a little more HP than advertised......but it really is hard to pin that down......if they were the "same " motors as the ocean runner and ocean pros.... then they would be rated at the same RPM.....sooooo something is different... they put most of those motors on bass boats!........ bob

Yes thing about making that hole they come thru a little bigger when I get the new ones.and I was by my self And Bob at 400o rpms your crusing and when you push it to WOT its like it has another gear and he was asking 4550 but it is sun fade it but I think a little clear coat will make it look new again and the teleflex cables were tight you had to use bouth hands to steer it to fast for that.

Re: 150 fast strike

well put sterring cables back in today instructions say may have to take motor off boat but took jigsaw and notch out hole a little hope it wont hurt nothing other teleflex cables had a kink that was the reason it was so hard to steer and had a little age on them does anyone think the fiberglass will crack hope not.
