150 Four stroke oil leaking problem

Greetings
I have a 05 150 four stroke on my NorthRiver Seahawk. After spending a day on the river and pulling it out, I have noticed a very small amount of oil that is on the bottom of the cowling. It is not really noticable at the ramp but when I get home and lift the motor all the way up, that is when the oil is noticable. I had an 04 150 that did the same and after the Yamaha tech couldn't figure it out, they put an 05 on it. For the first ten hours it was fine and then after the first oil change, I noticed some oil. I wiped it all up thinking it was just left over from the service but today when I towed the boat home and looked, I could see a very small amount.

The 04 150 that I had leaked more and was a lot more noticable. It would actually pool up after two trips or so. This 05 doesn't leak enough to pool up but I can see a small line where the oil is when I get home.

Any suggestions or other 150 owners with the same ordeal?

Re: 150 Four stroke oil leaking problem

I have the same motor 04 F150 and have not incurred any of the problems you're explaining.

Does this happen when you are operating the motor in the normal position or do you think it happens when the motor is tilted? Perhaps if you're tilting the up to get into skinny water while fishing the oil may be leaking back through the dipstick tube. The same thing can apply to tilting the motor during trailering. Other than a loose oil filter , this seems to be the most likely source point for oil to leave the motor.

Let us know know what you find out so that I can have a heads up if it should happen on my end.

My thoughts
Kevin

Re: 150 Four stroke oil leaking problem

I don't run in much skinny water but I do trim up my motor when running. The leak in my O4 F150 was pretty bad. I bet 4 drops pooled up when I lifted the motor all the way up per trip. It didn't start happening until I had about 15 hours or so on the motor.

My 05 has 20 hours on it and not even a drop pools up. I checked hard around the filter and the dip stick tube but I can't see where any oil could have came through. I had the 04 back at the dealer three or four times and they never could find out where it was leaking from. They even put some dye in the oil that would glow under a black light but couldn't find it. They pulled the power head, replaced some things but the leak came back.

I have always had inboards and they never leaked a drop of oil. I guess if it is a leak, it will only get worse so that might help in finding where it is coming from. I just wonder if the ride home on the trailer is somehow causing it.
