A common problem with this motor is the exhaust prop ring failure that lets exhaust pass by the prop and causes cavitation. the wonderful designers at mercury increased the gear case size and now have to run a shim so a standard sized prop will work. Very poor design. Does anyone know if there is a long term fix.

Heat up and bend tabs tighter. And don’t run in shallow sandy water

It's plastic, tabs are fixed in size, bending them won't do a thing. I solved the issue by gluing in the new ring. Very poor design. Saw a motor with only 80hrs with blown out ring. Very Very poor design.

Hi.

I can tell you that heating the plastic tabs a little and bending further inwards....certainly works. Mine is still in place now.
agree. Poor design though.
