I purchased the above engine this summer and the oil tank is getting low. Can I use regular 2 stroke oil I can buy at the dollar store or does it take a special kind of oil?

Re: 150 hp Merc 2 stroke

There are 2 distinctly different types of 2 stroke oil. One is for water cooled engines, the other for air cooled. For a water cooled outboard engine you need the type that is for water cooled engines, and it needs to have a rating of TC-W3 or higher. If it were my 150hp I would ONLY be putting Merc Premium Plus in it. You may save a few dollars on some cheap oil, but you pay many times over in the long run....

Your choice... Save a few dollars now and pay out thousands for a rebuild in the future, or pay a few dollars now and have an engine that will last a long time....

The tank holds 3 gallons of oil. Doesn't need to be full, but I fill mine in the spring and it usually takes at least 2.

That's a high performance engine. Use a high performance oil. TCW-2 or TCW-3 is the minimum spec, depending on the year. Mercury oil is good. The plus is better. Opti oil is not for this engine. A lot of guys run PennZoil synth blend or even full synthetic. Not any more expensive, and probably better oil. Stay away from oils that make fantastic claims but don't have the TCW3 rating.

hope it helps

Re: 150 hp Merc 2 stroke

Bob, All non direct injection Mercs (and OMC motors too) are designed to work just fine on any TCW-III rated, 2 cycle oil. There are all kinds of claims of superior performance, cleaner running and longer lasting from folks who have specific preferences for one brand of oil or another.

It's your motor, run what you want. Wallyworld TCW-II works just fine in that motor as will Merc Premimum Plus and other premium oils.

Wallyworld oil on sale for $7/gal, adds 14 cents oil cost to every gallon of fuel. If you pay $35/gal for some premium oil, it will add 70 cents oil cost to every gal of fuel.

However, it is your money...

I think they may have been assuming you meant Penzoil pure Synthetic Oil. This is not a recomended oil for steel sleeved engines. However, the Penzoil blended Synthetic is and excellent oil. You just have to remember to read the label because the container labeling is very similar in appearance.

Bob, "Wallyworld" is a derogatory term for "Walmart".

Good think I didn't ask for it by name (I thought it kind of a cool name) at my favorite Marina.
